 What Is Ephedra?

Ephedra is the botanical originator for the sympathomimetic alkaloid ephedrine. This herb is also known as ma huang.  The roots of this herb have been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of asthma.

Reports have made that ephedrine has caused many deaths due to this alkaloid.  Chinese people are known to use this medicine still even after FDA has banned it.

Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic, which enhances the sympathetic nerves both directly and indirectly.  The bronchi are dilated due to the activation of ß adrenergic receptors. It is also used as nasal decongestant.  Ephedra has also been used for various other disease including nocturnal enuresis, diabetic neuropathic edema, dysmenorrhea, narcolepsy, and myasthenia gravis.

 How Does Ephedra Works?

However, supplements containing ephedra are still available in the market.  Ephedrine should not be used in combination with some antidepressants named serotonin-norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitors.  The risks becomes more as the serum level of norepinephrine is high.  As the product is banned, there are no chances to get this medicine with a medical prescription.
